Peonies

JoLynne Martinez

Day 73
These just today poked through the soil in my neighbor's garden. In our part of the world, they will be in full bloom around Memorial Day (late May), which means that older generations associate the flowers with decorating graves. I recall visiting cemeteries with older relatives and seeing bouquets of peonies in repurposed tin cans on gravesites. But today the bright red of shoots made me think of new life in these very beginning days of spring.
