at the pier, the Cent-Suisses soldiers were forming a guard of honour for people disembarking from a steamboat. The spears (and all the other metalwork for the FĂȘte des Vignerons, including the crowns for the best winegrowers) were forged at the last smithy in Switzerland, in Chexbres. Philippe Naegele, the forgeron, will shortly be retiring but he has handed over the reins to a young lady smith, Bertille Laguet.
