Bushfire Aftermath

Ian Sanderson

I took a drive along the Putty Rd. a back route from Sydney to the Hunter Valley. The road has been closed because of bushfires for the last few weeks. This is some of the aftermath. The landscape is scorched for tens of kilometres. The fires are still burning, and are hug.

Many eucalypts regenerate after fire through epicormic shoots. These trees were burnt only a couple of weeks ago, but they have already sprouted to get a hit of food and energy. When the trees develop a normal canopy these shoots will drop away.
