Wonder Wheel with Fireworks

Linus Gelber

Coney Island celebrates every summer Friday with fireworks over the beach, just beyond the doomed Astroland amusement park. I'm told that the Wonder Wheel ferris wheel will survive the park closing, but after Big Money does its dirty work down here it will be a very different Coney Island indeed.

We're here to ride the Cyclone, which is awesome as ever, and to wander over to the Freak Show for tonight's Burlesque on the Beach. And there's a stop at Nathan's for hot dogs and chili fries. What better way to spend Friday the 13th?

The woman in front of me at Nathan's orders in waves rather than all at once, and it takes 20 minutes before I get my fries. While she's waiting she puts her industrial-sized Coke up to her face, clamps her mouth over the dimple hole where the straw should fit, and sucks the whole thing dry in three goes. It's amazingly gross.

You might want to see this one a little bigger.
