Ladies in waiting to rent a cottage in the Isle of Wright

Robert Harper

Cities have some ancient buildings, but you can never catch them in their original glory. You get telegraph wires, (damn them). Traffic signs, (tear them down). Modern cars, (ban them). People in modern dress (can you really trust the judgement of a man that can not buy trousers that are the correct size and fit).

All of these things somehow throws a spaniard in the works (did you see what I just did there, the statues are by a Spannish artist.) and gives the game way. So you have to creep about until you find the spot where all of that modern visual noise vanishes. You have to compose a photo with details from another time. This means rising early in the morning or creeping about in the dead of night.

In this photo the iron lamp-post and the small wooden kiosk are definately from another age and the sepia colours sibliminally enforce the idea that this just might be and old photo. However the "lady in waiting" sculpture in the foreground anchors the photo firmly in the present.
