Abandonment

Caryn Stein

We're constantly being told to look up, look ahead, look out ... but never are we told to look down. In fact, we're told explicitly: don't look down. It's not seemly, really. Because what's down there, after all? Bits and pieces of you, things left behind. A world lining the world we think we're in. It's enough to make you dizzy and perhaps you could fall. So it's a little quiet and pretty dirty most of the time, but there are stories down here, just like any other place. Reminders ... bookmarks of things we thought we'd get around to revisiting, but were much too busy to take the time. But if you were to crouch a bit, level yourself while no one is watching of course, would you be willing? You may find things need attention here, while you'd normally be trampling through, full speed ahead, unaware.
