Light Design and Fernsehturm v. 2.0

Linus Gelber

Berlin's television tower, reflected in the golden windows of the Palast der Republik.

This is a new visit to an older image, taken in August of 2005 and uploaded originally in October or so. I've learned to skew and stretch image content since then, and this photo has always called out for that. This weekend, Utata mounted a project on lines, and it seemed a proper time to go back and apply some new knowledge to the shot.

When I originally posted this, I wrote:

"In the bronzed mirror windows of the Palast der Republik, the Fernsehturm TV tower in Alexanderplatz is an otherworldly outpost vision.

"The Palast (Palace of the Republic) was the East German parliament building, and a center for Soviet-controlled East German politics and culture. After the Wall came down the building was found to be one of the most asbestos-ridden structures in the world, and it is supposed to be demolished sometime in the very near future.

"My girlfriend when I lived in Berlin was East German, and had been brought here as a child with her Kinderchor choir to perform. She regarded the building with the kind of quiet, internal loathing that East Germans reserve for the old symbols of the Soviet empire."

Tech specs: Olympus C-765, 1/800 second, f/4.5, ISO 200, focal length 18.5mm.

This photo has been spotted as high as #173 in the Flickr daily Interestingness charts.
