Still Life with Apples

Amy Stanton

Apples symbolize many different things. It was an apple Eve plucked from the tree in the Garden of Eden, which shaped the history of mankind from that point forward. Legend would have it that an apple fell on Newton's head and helped that genius develop his theory of gravity. William Tell shot an arrow through an apple perched on his son's head. Johnny Appleseed planted hope and goodwill along with the appleseeds he dispersed throughout his wide travels. We offer our school teachers apples and eat them daily to keep doctors away. Apple pies symbolize American wholesomeness and stirs up nostalgia for our mother's and grandmother's kitchens. Each rosy form and sweet bite contains a whole world of associations.
