The Magnitude of Fingerprints

Caryn Stein

There are times when it seems impossible ... the times where it would be easy to give up, to let the lack of time, the shadow of distance overcome us and just close the door and go. The distance is easy, the missing is easy ... it's bridging the gap that's hard. Hugging a pillow, whispering into the phone. The luxury of a quiet dinner, a tiny candle ... the enormity and importance of this is revealed as we sit in silence, after miles of longing, traffic jams, arcing across time and time again ... and the way a distance is measured is on the scale of fingertips pressed lightly as if this is how it always should be.
