OneHandB&W

Carol Schiraldi

Hands that work. Hands that play. Hands that pray. Tiny hands from babies. Large comforting, smothering hands of men. Hands that scare us. Hands that wave. Clenched fists. Hands that put an end to open arms.

When I look at a portrait, I look at the expression on one's face. This tells me who the person wants to be. If you want to see who we really are-who we really are, not who we want to be-look at our hands.

These are the hands that lift boxes, that steer scooters in the park, that rock our infants to sleep. These are the hands that type, that write, that play the piano, that dig ditches and nurse the sick back to health. And, yes, these are the hands that take pictures too.

What have your hands done today?
