Grampa's slippers

Rachel Irving

They've been hanging on my living room wall since we lived here, and before that they were finials on our bamboo curtain pole in San Francisco. Mamgu gave them to me years ago. "He brought them back from India," she said, "I think he imagined he was going to wear them but I don't think he really ever did. The moth got at one of them."

Sometime after he died she showed me a quote he'd written down, that had taken her fancy, "Never judge a man until you have walked a mile in his moccassins."
