The Snow Queen 2

Rachel Irving

Kay and Gerda lived close to each other, more like brother and sister than as friends. In Summertime they watched the roses bloom beside their windows, in Wintertime they placed hot pennies on the frozen windowpanes so they could peep out to see each other.

Grandmother, with a cat curled up in her lap, would tell them stories. When the first blizzards of the season came she would tell them about the Snow Queen. One night as the snow fell outside his window Kay saw her for himself; fair and beautiful, but made of glittering ice.

Spring returned at last, and again the roses bloomed. One day when the children were looking at their picture books Kay cried out and complained of a sharp pain in his heart and in his eye; but when Gerda offered him comfort he pushed her aside.
