During Ross's bike tour their guide Gilad informed them that the reason so many things are painted blue in Israel is that the color repels flies. A brief search did not turn up any scientific papers or cultural artifacts corroborating this unlikely claim.

(Gilad apparently also told the group that religious Jews believe secular Jews get reincarnated as fruits. It sounds like he was a fun guide.)
