Actually someone who also grew up in Penicuik just flickr mailed me to say that what I have always called the boathouse is in fact the curling club hut:
"inside they have lots of little cupboards for pairs of stones - i think in the old days everyone had their own cupboard or box. i know one of my great grandad's had one with his name on. there was also a little woodburning stove in there.".

Now I want to see inside! I will go back in winter when its frozen and hope there are people crling out on the ice...cant wait!
