This is volume 1 of a 10 volume set of books developed by Charles Sylvester at the beginning of the last century. They were for children as a way to introduce them to literature. The first volume started out with nursery rhymes, Aesop's fables, and fairy stories. The reading becomes more advanced as you move through the volumes. It also comes with a guide to help parents. It is a lovely set with lovely illustrations and as you can see from this first volume it is the most used.

Complete sets can be had at a reasonable price on ebay thought they might not be the original set like this since they continued to be republished every couple of years into the 1950s. It would be an excellent buy for anyone that has children and is interested in literature.
