Massachusetts Korean War Memorial

Brenda Anderson

In Charlestown, Mass

My uncle, Bernard J. Burpee, Airman 1C, was killed in a B-25 bomber training flight out of Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma, on Oct 27th, 1953, 4 days shy of his 22nd birthday. He was a newlywed. He is counted among the Korean War casualties even though he was stateside at the time of his death. My grandmother was a Gold Star Mother and was active in the organization for many years. At the time of her death, she was one of the few remaining Korean War Gold Star Mothers.

This monument is in honor of Massachusetts veterans rather than Maine, but it always reminds me of the uncle I never knew.
