the sheep of Vimy

Stephanie Fysh

In the lands surrounding the Vimy Memorial near Arras, France, marking the 1917-18 Battle of Vimy Ridge -- lands granted by France to Canada, which has left them to return naturally, while the surrounding farmlands were flattened back into fields -- there are areas where the grass is not mowed because of the persistence of live ordinance. Sheep graze there. How can we forget what hasn't yet ended?
