Mask

Catherine Jamieson

My camera exists, as that old Luscious Jackson song goes, "to say the things I haven't said". I am an imperfect translator for my eyes.

My words make a sieve of the wonders they see; they editorialize, subjectify, slant, distort, humanize and justify. They believe in the idea of truth, they just do not know how to achieve it.

Absent of the magic kinesthetic memory my body owns, my eyes cannot reproduce a visual memory except in vague solarized fragments. My camera is the conduit between my eyes and my world - it writes my poems and tells my stories.

The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking.
