heron leaving nest

Sara Heinrichs

Had to do some serious driving over the weekend, so this morning, on 2 hours sleep, I gave myself a little detour and found these amazing great blue heron nests.

I had crawled under barb wire fences and waded across cold slimy ponds to get here, and left my long lens in the car, so no close ups, but I just loved the shape of the nests, the tree, and the departing heron. There are still several in the nests, but they were near impossible to see, despite their size, until they moved around or took off.

Majestic birds.
