Dinner with Wurlitzer Bruck

HaniHong

The sun was setting over the Hudson River as Gene was telling me one of his fascinating stories of which he and Marianne are full of many, like the time they had to appraise Toscanini's estate of over 10,000 items -- in the days before they had a computer and had to catalog everything on paper by hand.

Gene & Marianne are two of my favorite people in the world. Their home is a gallery of fantastic music ephemera that they deal, and the best part is that you can touch and play with everything.

On this trip, I noticed a 4-foot long trunk-looking thing. I asked Marianne what it was and she demonstrated instead -- cranking the side of the wood box, and out came music. Cool music box! "How old is it?" I inquired.

"It was built in 1885." The coolest part is that it was there to be played, and not under museum glass somewhere to never be heard again.
