At the turn of the last century many affluent farms were abandoned in favour of more modern surroundings. Country bumpkins became city folk and the amount of land being cultivated, while steadily growing to fill demand, was in the hands of fewer and fewer individuals. This meant hiring out the work to farmhands, paying their salaries, and providing food and shelter. The days of farms operated solely by one family were becoming numbered.
