harmony hands

McBeth

This signage stands on the corner of the Habitat for Humanity condo property where I live.

When our neighborhood was first rehabbed nearly 10 years ago we (residents) had the work of coming up with our own condominium association name and we all had a hand (HA!) in helping to create the sign that we wanted to represent our new homes.

All the moms brought their children to my unit one Saturday morning roughly 8 years ago and we gave each child a big blank piece of art paper. We helped the kids dip the palm sides of their hands into skin-safe paint, then we helped them make their handprints on the art paper.

From there, the dried handprints were taken to the sign maker people, who etched out each child's handprints onto our new community sign around the condo association name.

The thought we collectively used about how to make something good and lasting, the way we brainstormed how to try to leave a positive legacy (or in many cases, to begin the positive legacy) for our children was one of the best thing we've done so far, I think.
