abstract responsibility

Greg Wolkins

Today we live with the assumption that all places of business must be responsible for the behavior of everyone who enters their building. We now can choose to be irresponsible, and if we get hurt in the process we can file a lawsuit so that someone else will be required to pay for our foolish decisions. McDonald's is forced to place a warning label on their coffee, because we obviously are too stupid to know that coffee is supposed to be hot. Electric hair dryers come with a warning imploring us not to use this object in the bathtub, and must do so using language that does not insult our intelligence. Otherwise there may be a lawsuit pending that they "talked mean to us", and by God we just can't handle that.
