Sunken Forest Fire Island

Alida Thorpe

On the left is the ocean. The sand dunes here contain a maritime forest. The trees are pruned by the salt air and ocean breezes.

It was absolutely beautiful here today. September and October are the best months on Fire Island, in my opinion, because the summer crowds are gone. It was quiet except for the sound of the ocean waves and birds. An occassional plane or helicopter passes overhead. It is warm between the dunes and a long walk is the perfect way to spend the day.
