One way to make use of an otherwise wasted overexposed slide scan.

This one was not straightforward, but the elements included levels, two layers, one inverted + threshold, one positive + threshold, and then layer blending via darken. You end up with a half positive, half negative threshold depending on values... some areas even remotely resemble the Sabatier Effect.
