in the back garden
It’s an every day scene – a knobbled church spire overlooking a puzzle of red-bricked roofs. Phone lines, fence posts, porches and extensions. Rusted roofs on outbuildings.
A livid blue sky – a bruise of rain threatened by the time the church clock chimes three. Yew bushes, privet trees and witch hazel in bloom. An every day story of every day life.
Except that in the back garden there are cows grazing, their brick-red and rusted rumps gleaming in the pre-rain light. Forcing us to imagine all the open space that must exist beyond this not-quite-so every day scene.
