HyPNoHoLE

And now a reunion with your first musical partner after a quarter of a century of animosity?

There was never really any animosity. We just never spoke to one another. Then I did a couple of summer festivals two years ago and play a couple of old Beat Ravisher tunes as well as my songs and it just felt completely comfortable. Not maudlin or sentimental but just right. So I picked up the phone to Dave and we met up and I told him I’d been playing his tunes and he asked me for his cut and I told him to eff off and it went from there. He’s got a studio in a cottage at the end of his garden. Honestly - we’re like two clichés of middle-aged rockers - I’ve got a little yacht and he’s got a studio in a chocolate box cottage at the end of his garden. So we pretty much moved into his house for the summer holidays and he drank more expensive wine than he’ll ever pay for with the record and I drank Irn Bru without vodka and we made music. It was like the twenty five year gap since the first record never happened.

And are you both happy with the result?

I’m properly happy with it. I think Dave’s happy with it. Funnily enough, the last record I felt properly satisfied with was Hypnohole [the first Beat Ravisher single]. When we’d finished that we honestly thought it was better than anything anybody else was doing. And DJs still play it … to old geezers down the pub who think they can still breakdance, you know?
And when we’d finished this new album I just kind of sat back with my arms behind my head and a massive smug grin on my face and thought “yeah!”. So if it’s shit then I’m retiring.
