Cindy Sherman is famous for shooting self-portraits of different people, all of whom are her, though she's not the subject of any of them. Her most influential work is a series called Untitled Film Stills, which appear to depict undifferentiated moments lifted out of context from black and white movies of the 1950s or early 60s. All photography is, by nature, a moment isolated in time; movies string those moments together to create a narrative. By divorcing one movie moment from all the other moments, Sherman is able to suggest a narrative that doesn't actually exist.
