Land Iguana

The Land Iguana (Conolophus subcristatus)

Land iguanas are not endemic to the Galapagos but these large, yellow iguanas are native to six of the islands. They walk on land and eat cactus, fruit and low-growing plants and shrubs.

There is another iguana on the Galapagos Islands, the Marine Iguana. The darker marine iguana is unique in that it has the ability to live and forage in the sea. They are only found in the Galapagos. They sit on the black lava rock to sun themselves and to escape the cold temperatures of the equatorial waters, shared with sea lions, penguins and sharks.

As all other wildlife on the Galapagos, the iguanas do not fear humans.
