The trail we hiked follows Mill Creek up the canyon, and this is the first of several lakes we came to. I couldn't figure out exactly what we were seeing, how the water was being held back and why. Then Nancy told me there were beavers in the area and this was a beaver dam and lake. Damn! I should have recognized it right away.
