Aiming Far But Not High

The boy stands on the edge of the open water with a rock in his hand and chooses. If he throws it high, it will soar in an arc and land with a plop, spreading a smooth ripple around a splash crown that will exist for only a glorious 1/1000th of a second. If he throws it long and far it will move away from him in a straight line and skid across the water in skips that leave small wakes behind them until it loses momentum and falls into the water. Burn bright, or burn long? This is not a question we often get to ask ourselves directly, but it is one we answer tacitly when we face the open water of life. Should we aim far, or high?
