Chickens

I lived in the country when I was a girl and the mornings were characterized by the crow of a rooster, usually the one we called “Freddie” who liked to sit atop the fence post closest to the barn, all the better to observe the hens and get a jump, literally, on the other roosters. You hear about the audacity of roosters, children’s books are full of references and let’s not forget Disney’s inimitable Foghorn Leghorn. Inspired by them we have many expressions from “cock of the walk” to “crowing like a rooster”; the city of Denizli, Turkey has an image of a crowing rooster in its coat-of-arms and a common expression in Turkish is “you make as much noise as a Denizli rooster!”

Here we have a rooster engaging in the other activity for which roosters are famed. He preens and grooms himself, for apparently a rooster not only walks the walk and talks the talk, but he wants to look the part as well.
