Strawberries

In the 16th century an obscure English physician named Boteler said, “Doubtless God could have made a better berry, but doubtless God never did.” Of all the creations on this old Earth, the strawberry is the one most likely to make a skeptical person believe in a benevolent God. In appearance and flavor, this berry is so close to being perfect as to make no difference.

Everything about the strawberry pleases. Its heartlike shape lends itself to an organically beautiful display in a bowl. Its color draws the eye, but its small size prevents it from being gaudy or ostentatious. Its taste makes the tongue wish it was capable of applause.

How good is a strawberry? It’s this good: 350 years after his death Dr. Boteler is still remembered simply because he said one clever thing about a tiny piece of fruit.
