What’s at the top of the stairs? It’s a mystery…a “slim little, barefoot mystery,” as Yevtushenko would say…and everybody loves a mystery. The suspense, the wondering, the guessing, the ambiguity, the uncertainty and knowing the uncertainty will end.

What’s at the top of the stairs? Light. Illumination. A revelation that clears away the darkness. The answer we’ve been seeking. What’s at the top of the stairs? We don’t know. The suspense is terrible. The suspense is terrific.

What’s at the top of the stairs? We can’t know until we climb them. And that’s the true reason we love a mystery. We love the quest for the solution. In the end, what’s awaiting us atop the stairs is less important than the climbing of them.
