The Huichol Indians of Mexico believe that the Hummingbird symbolizes transformation and guides the young children through the Nierika, which is the doorway to the other world. She escorts them, according to legend, to all of the secret places of power and knowledge. D.H. Lawrence postulated that a hummingbird was made even before flowers, was “as big as Moses” and that creation itself was enabled in the soft warm-air wake of these jewel necked creatures.
I have neither the wisdom of the ancient Huichol elders nor the whimsical imagination of Lawrence, so I do not know whether they were the harbiingers of creation or the chaperones of innocents. I know only that they are beautiful and that this photograph allows me to believe either thing might be true.
