She turns her head and casts a cool, quiet, sidelong glance. There’s nothing coy about this, nothing bashful or coquettish. This a composed appraisal, an unhurried and unruffled evaluation. This is the look made famous by Marlene Dietrich. Imperturbable. Unimpressed. Thoughtful.
What is going on behind those eyes? What is she thinking? We can almost see the synapses firing, the thoughts dancing behind the veil. We’re willing to wait to see what she says, though we’re not at all certain she’ll bother to tell us.
Yeats knew this look. Yeats understood that the mute, fluid dance of thoughts matters more than the expression of those thoughts. He understood that the dancer is indistinguishable from the dance.
