Emma Louise Cutting

Outside the window the night is blacker than black, but there’s a light inside the room that reaches every corner— and it’s coming from Emma Louise. All these straight-backed, hard-bottomed, formal-dinner chairs sit empty and embarrassed, silently willing their stiff lines to melt into the smooth curves she is making with her body… or become as soft as her swirling hair. Even the curtain yearns to follow the line of her arm.

Yet she dances alone, feet bare and fingers pointing as delicately as if she were pouring a cup of tea. It is New Year’s Eve and she likes this song and Emma Louise is happy. She will not open her eyes to look for a partner. There is no one she needs to lead or follow.

This picture is for those of you who, like me, are sometimes afraid of your own happiness.

So many mights and coulds and would’ves in our lives. So many times we liked this song and we were happy but—dance by ourselves? Put our joy on display? Um…

Outside the window the night is always blacker than black. It’s a new year. If you’ve got a light to shine, friends, turn it on. Emma Louise can tell you how good it feels.
