Les jumelles françaises

Twins are spooky-cool. Two beings, separate but connected, emerging from the same womb—sometimes the same egg—sharing primeval memories in the same dark sea… if you’re not a twin, the idea of having one is both shivery and strange, like imagining life with a doppelgänger, or suddenly slipping into a parallel universe. Twins are the stuff of myth and fantasy; they’re always busy battling each other to the death, or turning the world upside down. Together, twins possess the bewildering power of being a thing and its opposite at the same time.

In real life, of course, twins are often to be found engaged in rather prosaic activities like living in Austin translating French and walking their cynophobic dogs at night. Still, every once in a while, standing next to each other with their identical eyebrows telegraphing cryptic signals, one pair of lips turned up and the other turned down, one dress white as snow and one black as coal, there’s a little bit of magic about them that you can’t deny.
