Constraint

A street lined with a series of perfectly popsicle-shaped trees, clipped like prize poodles made ready for the ring at the dog show, makes a statement.

It’s not a bad statement, exactly. It says the folks who live here care about their environment, and can afford to keep it spick and span. It says this is a street where order matters, where nature, while it is welcome, must follow a few simple rules: Know your space. Stay in it.

Still, there’s a tension in those orange popsicles. It takes a lot of work, a constant pinching and paring, to keep them frozen in place the way they are. Until, of course, the season deepens enough that no human effort can keep these trees from changing their form.

Fall descends and so will the leaves. And when winter comes, though their branches may not push beyond the constraints that were set in the spring, no two of these trees will any longer be exactly the same.
