Early Morning Texas Trees

Just the pair of them, by the road. People may pass or not, and it doesn’t matter. Birds may rest in their branches or not, and they don’t mind. The wind may kick up dust or be still, and it does not bother them. They have grown with the years and changed with the seasons, the shorter one bowed in a slight deferential nod to the taller one. Just the pair of them, the way it’s been for so long it seems like always, standing by the road in the quiet, in the noise, in the sun, in the rain. Just the pair of them, by the road, standing. And not waiting.
