Well, there it was. Out in the open. She’d said them, the four scariest words. The four words he’d known were coming. He’d known they were coming for some time, and he’d dodged them as long as he could. But she was smart and persistent and patient and more realistic than he was, and she’d finally caught him in a place he couldn’t evade the situation. She leaned towards him, leaned in close, and said them, softly but with sincerity. The four scariest words.
They were scary for her as well, he understood that. That she was determined to say those words despite all his contortions to avoid them was an indication of how strongly she felt. They would change things, those words. Maybe change everything. And even though he recognized that the words needed to be said, he was afraid of the change.
But there was also a sense of relief. When she leaned in close and said those four words, they could never ever be taken back. They had to be dealt with. It was time.
“We need to talk.”
