Let us give praise today, the praise of summer in small towns.

Praise the distant sound of lawns being mowed on a weekday evening, and the smell of the backyard barbecue, and the romantic blunderings of fireflies. Praise the humbling thunderstorm and the watermelon taste of picnics. Praise the chatter of high school girls playing softball, praise the hammock and the nap therein, praise the garden with its yellow-blossomed zucchini. Give praise to the slow rhythms of fishing.

Let us on this day give small praises for the small crisp things of summer in small towns, for there lies the path to contentment.
