A simple kiss can be so complicated.

To start there’s the hesitant uncertain kiss. Evidence suggests that at first we kiss in order to assess the compatibility of a mate. So much more than an exchange of saliva, it can be a deal breaker. Does he like the way she smells? Does her neck hurt as she arches up to him? Is the texture of his skin enough to compensate? Does it all feel right?

Then there is the passionate kiss. The sure and certain kiss that swims in hormones, an appetizer, a warm up, an exchange of lust.

Or here’s a bold and public kiss, that makes a claim; lips locked, he is hers, as she is his. The world should know it and be happy.

There’s the private early morning kiss that will protect her through the day, the memory will be a secret warmth when she runs, and slips, and misses her bus. It will insure him against negligent drivers as he slithers his bike through downtown traffic.

A kiss, a simple and complicated message, with no words.
