shadow stairs

We write because the page is blank. We write because the Imperative of the Empty Page requires it.

It’s humbling to be reminded that nothing we put on the page is half so meaningful as the passing shadow of an old woman slowly and carefully making her way down a stairway in Montreal.

She was there, then she was gone. No, that’s not right. She wasn’t even there. Just her shadow. A transient disruption of light. Nothing is permanent. And so everything is beautiful.

She was there and not there, then she wasn’t there, and the page is blank again, and we are required once more to fill it. Let’s try to fill it with something beautiful.
