Into the Light
Lou Morgan

Photograph; from the Greek words “phos” meaning “light”, and “graph” which means “to draw”. A photograph is therefore a drawing made with light. This is just such a picture. I could use it as an example to teach Martians about photographs. Look how the central figure has cartoon outlines of light, see how the people in the shadows are slightly sketched in.

Camera; a box, a chamber, an apparatus for drawing with light. It should be lightproof with an aperture to let in the correct amount of light. The chamber in this picture has an aperture; a skylight, or a hole in the roof, but there appear to be no shutters or timers. The sunlight enters as it pleases and lasts for as long as nature directs it to stay.

The boy loves the light. He raises his smile to it. Everyday he sees life and colour because of light, everyday he sees growth and life. We are earthlings with cameras, we take photographs, we celebrate the light.
