I suspect her efforts are undervalued
*CA*

She has been here too many years. At the end of each working day her feet remind her of  just how many times she has trodden these carpeted corridors over the years, how many miles and miles of stairs she has climbed and descended.

Once, long ago, men would smile at her as she flitted through hallways, tripped lightly up the stairs. Others would studiously avert their eyes while their wives glanced in her direction and pulled on their spouse’s arm.

She never welcomed the attention – too much work to do, so many beds to make up, basins to clean and trash to clear.

These days she is invisible as she rushes by out of breath, attending to a guest with one towel too few, or bed that needs a counterpane folding down.

She worries about her future – there are grandchildren on the way. She should be easing back, finding time to care for them. Instead she thinks of the bills to pay and sets her teeth into a smile that, by and large, goes unnoticed.
