Marseille Psalm

He had an elder brother who could play the piano, the guitar, the bass, the clarinet, the didgeridoo and the oud.

He had a little sister who was captain of the school robotics team.

But Paul could fall.

One cousin had cycled across Asia raising money for extremely worthy causes, another could do long division in her head when she was only six years old.

But Paul could fall.

His mother was a cardiac surgeon, and his father a lecturer and poet who wrote exclusively in the englyn lleddbroest form.

But Paul could fall; better than a wartime paratrooper, better than a Hollywood stuntman, with the grace of a bird of prey, effortlessly combining gymnastics with geometry. Time after time he landed with a satisfying “splat”.
