Ben Innocent

the old mill and a fortunately placed puddle

You don’t have to stop, but you kinda really do have to stop, because it’s Polaroid week, and Polaroid week is all about that instant, all about right now, because it’s not like digital where you can shoot a dozen dozen images in the hope that one will come out, no sir, you get that one chance, and that’s it, so you really do have to stop and get out of the car and hope the light doesn’t shift and squat down to get the right angle as other cars race by and you hear snatches of music approaching and receding, and you press the shutter and there’s that sound, that whirring mechanical sound that’s a sort of music itself and then…

…and then you wait.

Then there it is. Rising to the surface. The photograph. And you got it right.

There’s probably a word in Urdu or Japanese or maybe Croatian to describe that feeling.
