DUNGENESS

Dungeness – where wild pristine landscape meets hi-tech power.

Where artists come seeking the light. Where nature lovers watch and wait, hoping for a glimpse of a lapwing or redshank. Where people walk their dogs, their bodies pressed against the sea breeze as they lean into this corner of England, perched on the edge of a wind-battered coast. Where salt-loving plants cling to the shingle that creeps slowly north-east, pushed and pulled by wind and water.

You might not see any of the 600 birds that live here. You might wander past the wooden homes scattered across this shingle and not encounter a single soul.  You might pass by on a rainy day without a second glance at the clumps of sea kale or the spikes of viper’s bugloss, but you cannot fail to notice one sight. A nuclear power plant shelters within this nature reserve, settled – for now – on the shifting shingle beach.
