alone at the top

It’s often the smallest things that make the biggest difference.

Perhaps you’ve seen the phrase on one of those motivational posters. A tiny kitten caresses the ear of a giant dog, or an insect pollinates a flower, and then those words are written in a flimsy font.

Although there are obviously no kittens or insects here, I feel it applies. It is the smallest things that make the biggest difference in this picture.

Would the photographer have shot it if the central figure was wearing a boring black parka?

Maybe.

If that face was not so kabuki white would I have remembered it?

Perhaps.

But it is the absolutely smallest things; the dark rimmed glasses and the slit of an open mouth, those details make the biggest difference, they give uncanny power to a solitary figure, alone at the top.
